Making a Difference

Although this is a fashion blog, it's taken me a long time to realize there's more to life than just clothes. Above is a segment from Nepal's Stolen Children: A CNN Freedom Project Documentary, where Demi Moore travels to Nepal in an effort to bring awareness on forced prostitution of young children, teenagers and adults. I apologize for being morbid; however, after watching this documentary, I had to share. Human trafficking is a problem throughout the whole world, not just Nepal. We need to acknowledge the realities of modern day slavery in order to make the necessary change. Let us not sit idly by anymore.

Kelly Cutrone said it best in her book, Normal Gets You Nowhere, p. 100: "We learn to pass by unspeakable things and situations without ever stopping, whether it's a mother hitting her child at a Wal-Mart or a homeless person starving or freezing on the street while we're on our way to American Apparel to get a two-for-one special on T-shirts. We shouldn't just accept destruction and individual devastation as normal everyday occurrences. Only when we start to attune to what's really happening all around us can we start to transform it."

XOXO,

Thank you for posting this and raising awareness. Human trafficking is a much larger problem than most people know. It's stuck in a system of lies, corruption, and power. We must bring light to these important issues to get them solved.

Agreed hun...it's all about awareness and a willingness to move forth and act on it.

Dude, OC's chock full of human trafficking and we are the suburbanite's dream locale...it's happening all around us and all it takes is some real exposure to get peeps to stand up and take notice.

Bravo to your upcoming adventures Lil, I know you're gonna do BIG things!

I really appreciate you posting this. Literally, I do this a lot. I'm ashamed of how selfish I'm becoming with shopping 3 times a month and not realizing whats important: humanity. I genuinely thank you for this post.

I love that you posted this because I find myself constantly venturing my blogs off track of what is 'fashion'. But life is definitely more than fashion and there's also more to fashion than just clothes!

Love the inspiring quote too!

I think it takes a lot of bravery not only to recognize the atrocities that occur in our world and to actually do something about it. Cheers to you for stepping up!

Thanks for sharing this Lily. I think it's important to sometimes take a step outside of constantly talking about fashion (which, let's face it, is a pretty materialistic art form at its core) and turn a focus to all the seriously horrible things that are going on in the world. It's amazing that people who are normally associated with fashion such as Demi or Kelly speak out about what's going on. Good for you for using your blog as a platform to discuss such important issues! Not everyone would be brave enough to stray from the normal topics that are associated with fashion blogs.

Hope you're staying out of this stupid rain today :)

I'm so glad you're going on this trip and making a difference! I sometimes forget how lucky I am to be living in Canada. Thank you for reminding us and doing something that's helping the world. Fashion is fun but there are more important issues out there.

Good for you for doing this and highlighting it in your blog. Life's not always about the latest it bag but unfortunately people go crazy for that more so than important issues. I hope your trip is fulfilling and do share with us your adventures.
