Nepal Quest Part 1

We all need a break, even from voluntary work. During Dashain, the most auspicious festival in the Nepalese annual calendar, I had the chance to be rid of the crowds, noise and pollution of Kathmandu and leave for higher ground for a couple of days. Located 200 km west of Kathmandu, Pokhara is the third largest city in Nepal. Surrounded by beautiful peaks of the Himalayas, luscious green forests and the magnificent Phewa Tal lake, Pokhara is a remarkable place of natural beauty and for some R&R.

As a volunteer, I was immersed in Nepal's culture differently than most tourists. I didn't have the western comforts I was used to or the luxury of staying in a nice hotel. That's not to say my living situation in Kathmandu was terrible by any means. Though occasionally there was no hot water (sometimes no water at all) and power cuts (euphemistically referred to as "load shedding"), I couldn't have been happier with my host family. They were very welcoming and always made sure I was comfortable and had plenty to eat.

Spending time with the children of OCCED/Nepal brought me the greatest joy of all. Initially I was reluctant, unsure whether I had the proper skills or enough passion to get involved. Then I was challenged and rewarded in a way I never imagined. More on that, and photos, in my next post.

XOXO,

Lily your trip to Nepal looked amazing and life changing. These pics are so beautiful! I honestly forgot that there's a whole other world out there to experience, other than NYC. When I saw your video, you doing the bungee jump, all I could think about was how much balls you had to do that. It must have been exhilarating. Then I read your post. And with much self control, I didn't cry. Your words always make me think differently and make me look at life in a different way. And I thank you for that. I'm so happy you're living your dream!

I'm so glad you enjoyed this Nepal trip and got so much out of it. It takes a lot of courage to leave the luxuries behind to a completely foreign place; especially when you've been given a task that requires great responsibilty and patience.

A lot of times, for me too, we're reluctant or unsure if we're capable of doing a certain thing. But I find that is what confines us from trying new things, experiencing new things, etc. We just need to possess a "can do" attitude, or else we'll miss out on things that we potentially love.

Happy to have you back and looking forward to seeing more pictures of your trip! Nepal is so beautiful. I love children, so I'd like to volunteer in Nepal in the future, too! After having a connection with the children and your host family, it must've been hard to leave.

Hope everything will only get better from here on for you. Perhaps this experience has led you into a new direction in terms of career\life goals?

So, so proud of you! :)

You've got SOME balls woman. haha I don't think I'd ever have the guts to do that. I'm so glad you did this, now you can definitely share with us a whole new different perspective on life.

Only it seems to me that once in your life before you die you ought to see a country where they don't talk in English and don't even want to. Flights to Abuja
