I'm Feeling Mellow

These songs are best listened while in a moving car, windows down, hands grasping the air as it passes by.

In light of yesterday's post, I received some criticism for asking for donations. There's no secret plot or scam, and I'm certainly not asking anyone to pay for my trip. All I want is to help United Planet and give others the opportunity to help as well. I did make a note of saying there's no obligation to donate and that moral support is more than enough, but apparently that still makes me an asshole.

As a first generation Vietnamese-Canadian, I admit I've taken for granted the struggles that my parents have gone through in their relentless pursuit for a better life. As I grow older, I take a more careful look at life, especially at my morals and my values. I don't need to be reminded by anyone how fortunate I am; it's written all over my blog. Regardless of the economy, regardless of what clothes, shoes and handbags you and I wear, there is always something to share. If you think I'm only talking about money, I feel bad for you.

Keeping in good spirits, I'll now leave you with this:

"The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings, but shorter tempers; wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less; we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees, but less sense; more knowledge, but less judgment; more experts, yet more problems; more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space, but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion; big men and small character; steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes, but more divorce; fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete.

Remember, spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever. Remember to say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side. Remember to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent. Remember to say "I love you" to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you. Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again. Give time to love, give time to speak, and give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER: Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away." — Dr. Bob Moorehead, The Paradox of Our Age

So the big news... I'm volunteering abroad with United Planet! Initially I applied to Peru, but after much thought and consideration, I decided to change my quest to Nepal instead. My confirmation dates are September 19th to October 17th. Once there, I'll stay with a host family and volunteer at the local orphanage in Kathmandu, capital of Nepal.

United Planet works with OCCED/Nepal (Organization for Community Child & Environment Development), a registered non-political and non-governmental organization with the goal of improving the lives of children and families in need in the Kathmandu area. This includes providing food, shelter, health services and education. As a volunteer, I'll be assisting in the areas of childcare and teaching at the orphanage.

This truly is out of my comfort zone. I've never been to Nepal or traveled overseas by myself before. I'm scared, but I'm more scared of what may happen if I don't go. I told myself at the beginning of the year to be an active participant in my own happiness. My decision to volunteer is the result of my favorite Muhammed Ali quote: "He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life."

Now to my friends and readers, I need your help fundraising. You've all been an influential and positive energy in my life, so I want you to be a part of this as well. Any donation, no matter the amount (even $5 will go a long way), would be greatly appreciated and will contribute to the program fee and help United Planet continue helping those who need it most. To make a donation and join me in trying to make a difference, click here.

Thank you all so much for your love and support on my journey. It means the world to me. Remember, if you woke up in your own bed this morning, you are blessed. Note: Please do not feel obligated to donate. Your moral support is more than enough.

XOXO,

"You're like, really tanned."

  • I got eyelash extensions.
  • I'm growing my hair out.
  • For those of you who asked, the app I used for my iPhone photos was Instagram.
  • It's been three nights since I was welcomed back by this place called home and already I can't wait for another escape. I need a new city to fall in love with.
  • Sometimes I think I have a mild case of seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
  • Next post will be about my news. I'm terrified and excited at the same time.

Jamaica was absolutely amazing. I loved it, every single millisecond of it, and I miss it so. It was unequivocally beautiful and I was blown away more and more as the days flew by and saw more of what the country had to offer. The people in Jamaica are some of the most warm, friendly and hospitable people that you will ever meet. Reminiscing back, it seems surreal that I was a part of such a phenomenal experience; almost like a faint memory, lived vicariously through the shoes of someone much more fabulous than I.

There's something about a beautiful woman that turns me quasi-lesbian. Shannyn Sossamon, you are one sexy bitch.

I'm taking off for some fun in the sun and heading to Montego Bay, Jamaica (yeah, mon!). I'll be back in Vancouver on the 15th. No updates till then.

I'd like to share with you guys even more great, spectacular, exciting, mind-blowing (to me anyway) news, which I'll reveal when I get back from vacation. If you've been following me on Facebook and Twitter, then you already know.

Tomorrow is Chinese/Vietnamese New Year (Tết), and with that, I'm absorbed in the idea of organization and moving on from those little things that tend to hold me back. I feel as if I'm on the verge of something. Something I've been waiting for a long time. Chúc Mừng Năm Mới!
